I was watching in the media, they seemed to focus on the POTUS and his aging over his tenure in office. Some related it to stress and time in office and others, like myself, likened it to age. But no matter who you are your hair is your crown!
There are many famous and non famous people who wear their crowning glory as an achievement and a testament to what they have endured over the years. Many view graying hair as a sign of arrival of your elder years. As for myself, my gray means that I have a testament to life and a story to tell, not a definement of my age or how long I have been here. Many younger generations have natural splashes of gray in their heads as well.
Medical journals have long since linked graying hair to premature aging and to other things like, vitaligo, cancer and even dementia. Your hair is approximately 91 percent protein, and is made up of long chains of amino acids.
As hair is pushed up through the hair follicle and towards the surface of your scalp, it goes through a process known as keratinization(1). The hair cells fill with fibrous proteins and lose their nucleus. By the time the hair reaches the surface, it’s nothing more than a complex system of interwoven protein-rich fibers.
As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color – gray or silver(2).
Your mane, crown or whatever you wish to call it is a reflection of you. Graying temples on a man are considered sexy and the silver mane of a woman her beautiful crown. Today in the hair industry, silver hair is a fashion statement. I say that salt and pepper hair is nothing to be ashamed of. Wear your crowning glory!
