I have a new love: Thrifting. I am just a little obsessed with thrift stores and resale shops. Never being one to blindly follow trends, I know what I like and what looks good on me, so I stick with it. Also, as any good student of fashion knows, fashion is cyclical--meaning that what’s old will most likely be “new” again at some point in the future. (Even the most hideous fashion trends have made a return appearance a time or two for whole new generations to enjoy.) Then, there are the classics (think denim or pearls) that will never go out of style.
Enter the thrift store or resale shop (if that makes you more comfortable.) I know. I know. “Why would I want to wear clothes that belonged to other people?” you may ask. Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but here’s why I, like so many others have become enamored with thrifting:
Vintage Finds
By definition, vintage is defined as anything 20 years or older, and vintage fashion can be fabulous (think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Diana Ross in Mahogany.) If you’re familiar with fashion history and have an eye for spotting great vintage pieces, then thrifting is for you.
Price
No store beats thrift store prices. I’ve gotten beautiful, quality pieces for as little as $3. Enough said.
One-of-kind Finds
I don’t know about you, but I get a rush from finding a really great piece that I know no one else will have. Styling and accessorizing thrifted items with existing pieces from my own closet is the epitome of personal style for me.
Some items are new
That’s right. Some items in thrift stores are brand new—as in never worn. This is rare, but it does happen.
Supporting a good cause
By purchasing at thrift store locations like the Salvation Army and Goodwill you are supporting ministries aimed at helping those in spiritual, psychological, and physical need.
So, what are you waiting for???
