The Top Five Red Lipsticks that will work for and on Black Women!

Bold...Sexy...Glamorous...Timeless...

I have had a love affair with red lipstick for as long as I can remember.  As a little girl, I remember visiting my great-grandmother and being completely mesmerized by her red lips and the way she would also put a little red lipstick on her cheeks and call it "rouge".  Red lipstick is one of those rare classics that will always be in fashion, and to many it is considered a rite of passage into womanhood.

Though black women have painted their lips red since ancient times (Cleopatra wore lipstick made from crushed carmine beetles and ant eggs to give her lips a deep red pigment), the color has received a bad rap from many women of color.  Nevertheless, red comes in many hues that compliment a variety of skin tones.

Here are a few red lipsticks I have found success with on both myself and my clients:

M.A.C.

Dubonnet, Underworld, Ruby Woo, M.A.C. Red, Diva

NARS

Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella

MAKE UP FOR EVER

Moulin Rouge

Mary Kay

Red

CHANEL

Rouge Coco #22 Paris

This list is not exhaustive.  You should experiment to find what works best for you.  Apply lipstick with a brush and use a lip liner for more precise application.  Using a lip primer before applying lipstick is also the best way to ensure a smooth texture and prevent "bleeding".  Most importantly, red lipstick should be applied on freshly exfoliated lips.  (Use Aquaphor Healing Ointment or Vaseline, and lightly rub lips with a dry toothbrush to remove any dead skin.)

GO RED!!!

Red lips are so pretty when done right - as seen in these pics. I was one of those teens that was forbidden from wearing red lips and nails, so I didnt get to do it until I was grown. Thats one of the few shades that will cover my naturally dark lips...but I would save it for a special occasion. Do you think it could be an everyday or casual lip color?
