Bold...Sexy...Glamorous...Timeless...
I have had a love affair with red lipstick for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, I remember visiting my great-grandmother and being completely mesmerized by her red lips and the way she would also put a little red lipstick on her cheeks and call it "rouge". Red lipstick is one of those rare classics that will always be in fashion, and to many it is considered a rite of passage into womanhood.
Though black women have painted their lips red since ancient times (Cleopatra wore lipstick made from crushed carmine beetles and ant eggs to give her lips a deep red pigment), the color has received a bad rap from many women of color. Nevertheless, red comes in many hues that compliment a variety of skin tones.
Here are a few red lipsticks I have found success with on both myself and my clients:
Dubonnet, Underworld, Ruby Woo, M.A.C. Red, Diva
Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella
Moulin Rouge
Red
This list is not exhaustive. You should experiment to find what works best for you. Apply lipstick with a brush and use a lip liner for more precise application. Using a lip primer before applying lipstick is also the best way to ensure a smooth texture and prevent "bleeding". Most importantly, red lipstick should be applied on freshly exfoliated lips. (Use Aquaphor Healing Ointment or Vaseline, and lightly rub lips with a dry toothbrush to remove any dead skin.)
As the old saying goes... "if you break it, you bought it" so "if you look at this, please share this" using the buttons below that connects with your Social Networks whether it's twitter, facebook or another- they will appreciate it, just like The BFHS Network does- thanks for sharing!!!
