People living with diabetes can suffer from a number of ailments. One of the most important health issues to pay attention to is the condition of their feet. Diabetics are more likely to suffer from several major foot issues such as: neuropathy, poor circulation & other serious issues. If left unattended these conditions can lead to calluses, ulcers & even amputations.
Diabetic neuropathy is characterized by limited or lack of sensation in the extremities. It usually strikes first in the feet. Common signs of neuropathy include but are not limited to: Feelings of numbness, a tingling or pins & needles like sensation or random strikes of pain throughout the foot. It is very important to always wear shoes to give your feet a higher level of protection when suffering from neuropathy. Also, extra care must be taken to protect your feet from extreme heat or extreme cold.
If a diabetic foot is subjected to friction or areas of high pressure, a callus may form. If left unattended the callus may develop into an ulcer or an open sore. This can occur anyplace on the foot, but the most common places are on the heel & the big toe. It is very important that this is treated immediately by a Dr to prevent an infection & even an amputation. It is vitally important to check your feet every day, to look for any marks, redness or any sign of irritation. It is also important not to cut your own toenails for the same reason, to limit the possibility of injuring yourself.
One way of protecting your feet & improving your quality of life is by participating in the Therapeutic Shoe Program. Under this program, Medicare & certain other insurances will pay for 1 pair of shoes & 3 pairs of special orthotics for you each year if you’re a diabetic & meet certain other requirements. The shoes come in a variety of styles, tennis, casual & dress as well as boots. They are quite stylish looking & very comfortable.http://www.pedorthicfeet.com
