Everywhere you turn, you hear blog this and blog that. Yes, blogs are becoming more mainstream as people increasingly use them as platforms to share their thoughts and ideas in various formats. I’m sure you have read some, and may even be considering entering the blogosphere. But before you do, there are few things you need to seriously consider. By answering the questions below, you will have an honest assessment of your blogging readiness. You will also have the beginnings of your blogging strategy or blogging business plan.
1. Why are you blogging?
This is by far THE most important question you need to answer. Do you want to blog because everyone else is doing it?
Do you feel compelled to do it because of media messages? Or, do you feel you really have something to say of value to your target audience? If you are doing it because you feel you have to and not because you want to, you will have a very short-lived blogging career.
2. What are you going to blog about?
It is imperative that you give this much thought before you begin. You should do research on the topics you are considering. If you want to blog about blogging, the market is already saturated. However, you could still use this topic if you come up with a more targeted topic or a very specific audience.
When selecting a blog topic, be sure to select something you are passionate about and can write about even when you experience blogger’s block. If you don’t have a passion for your topic, your readers will feel it and you will end up blogging by yourself to yourself.
3. Who is your audience?
Knowing your audience makes it easier to create content and get the messages out. Mommy blogging is all the buzz these days. That is a huge audience. However, you can create a blog for mommies who dance or mommies who want to throttle their teens. Be original. There is an audience for every topic under the sun. Just make sure they know your blog exists.
4. When are you going to blog?
Honestly, this is the primary demise of many bloggers. Many people jump onto the blogging bandwagon with excitement and when life happens, everything stops with blogging being the first to go. Be realistic about how much time you have to commit before you begin. Yes, blogging requires commitment. If you can only blog once a month, that’s fine. Let your audience know that when you begin. I strongly caution against starting a blog and not blogging consistently.
5. What type of blog will you have?
Blogs come in various formats – text, audio, photo, video and micro. You have to determine which method gets your messages across to your audience most effectively in the least amount of time for you.
Above are just a few things you need to consider before you start blogging. Be sure to really assess your interest, reasoning and readiness to blog. The answers to these questions will become the foundation of your blogging strategy or blogging business plan.
