Tell us a little about your Black Owned Business or Blog (no links or url's please) in 300 words max- we will share this on approval with our 250K network!
I am the founder of Polished Pebbles Girls Mentoring Program. I started it in 2009, since that time we have served over 500 girls (7-17 yrs. old) through 15 program sites, with a network of over 300 volunteers from the community and area businesses like Bloomingdale's, Microsoft, ThoughtWorks, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the Chicago Sky. We equip girls to be good communicators at home, school, and the future workplace. I also have a blog called KellyFairTheMentor at wordpress.com. It provides me and our team the opportunity share the experiences, lessons, and successes we've had while building Polished Pebbles here in Chicago.
Why did you become an Entrepreneur?
I left my corporate position managing national marketing at a global educational publisher to return to doing my direct service in youth/education within my community. I was seeking fulfillment. And, I felt like I had ideas, talents, and potential that couldn't be fully realized when I was working and volunteering for other agencies. Finally, a colleague just forced me to start implementing this concept of Polished Pebbles, and I did. I started off with 2 girls, but now have grown to have served well over 500 on the south and west sides of Chicago.
Why did you choose the niche that your business is in?
I'm a speech pathologist by training, so I have a background in education and serving those in need of building communication skills, my marketing background also prepared me for this role. But, perhaps the most qualifying thing in my background that preps me for this work, is the fact that I was an extremely shy girl in school. I was smart, had good grades by I lacked the confidence to make sure that my voice was heard, and didn't seek leadership opportunities until I was in college. I want to make sure that we can prevent more girls' self esteem from taking that typical dip in 6th grade, and mentor them to have the skills and confidence to express their voices at young ages.
