Today on October 21st, DAILY BLACK HISTORY FACTS! in 2003, Actor & Dancer, Fred "ReRun" Berry from “What’s Happening,” dies at the age of 52.  Fred Rerun Berry (March 19, 1951 – October 21, 2003) was an American actor and street dancer. He was best known for the role of Fred "Rerun" Stubbs on the popular 1970s television show What's Happening!!. Before starring on What's Happening!!, he was a member of the Los Angeles-based dance troupe The Lockers, with which he appeared on the third episode of Saturday Night Live. He also appeared on the dance music show Soul Train, and was featured in the program's signature line dance segment doing the memorable early 1970s dance step "the slo-mo".[3] What's Happening!! lasted from 1976 to 1979. Berry was a millionaire by age 29. After the show ended, Berry, weighing over 300 lbs, had trouble finding work because he was typecast with the Rerun character. Eventually, however, he came to embrace his typecasting, and made his peace with it as the best means to maintain his celebrity. In public, he was often seen wearing the red beret and suspenders that are part of the Rerun character. __________________________ Today in 1917, John Birk “Dizzy” Gillespie was born. He was a jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer and occasional singer. Allmusic's Scott Yanow wrote, "Dizzy Gillespie's contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis's emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated . . . Arguably Gillespie is remembered, by both critics and fans alike, as one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time." (Wikipedia) ________________________________ in 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was not enforced in Chicago. Physically distant from the South, and populated mostly by northerners, many with antislavery sentiments, Chicago was a relatively safe haven for fugitive slaves. After the adoption of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law by the United States Congress, the city's African American community formed a “Liberty Association” with regular patrols to subvert the legislation by preventing the seizure of blacks in the city by slaveholders and their agents. In October 1850 a slave catcher from Missouri arrived in the city and was informed by leading citizens that his safety was at risk if he stayed. Meanwhile, a slave he had brought with him to help capture the runaway also escaped. On October 21, 1850, the Chicago City Council passed a resolution condemning the new law as “cruel and unjust” and directing the city's police “not to render any assistance for the arrest of fugitive slaves.” more on - http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/1430.html ____________________________ in 2011 was the death of Mildred Hemmon Carter, first Black American female pilot in AL & spouse of one of the 33 original Tuskegee Airmen, Herbert Carter. They were known as Tuskegee's First Couple. Follow @BFHSNetworkSee More
