All the time I see people go out and find the cheapest printer they can find to use to print documents for their business or home. Unfortunately the printer manufacturers make the printers cheap so they can sell you the ink and toner at inflated prices. I always tell my clients to consult with me before they go out and spend money on a printer because you want to truly evaluate you printing needs and get a printer that matches your needs.
Once you identify a printer that fits you needs you need to evaluate the cost of the ink or toner cartridges for that printer and the cost per page. Many cartridges come in standard and high yield. The standard yield cartridge is the least expensive in terms of dollars but it will run out faster so the actual cost per page is more. The high yield cost the most in terms of dollars but usually gives you about three times the pages as the standard yield so in the long run the high yield really is the least expensive.
I also tell my clients if they only print small amounts of color copies they probably should get a small inkjet printer for the few times they print color and get a quality monochrome laser printer that they can use as their work horse for printing black and white pages. Toner cartridges will give you a very high quality printed document and the cost per page will be a lot less.
People complain all the time about gas prices and will shop around to find the best price for gas but will jump up and go to Staples or some other big box retailer and pay sometimes over $1800.00 per gallon for ink when there is a much better alternative.
